DIY Solar Water Heating

REVIEW & RECOMMENDATION:
FAVORITE DIY SOLAR WATER HEATING GUIDE

When I first heard about Tom Hayden’s DIY Solar Water Heater e-book, I had a good feeling it was worth the money. But when I read it, I realized the immense value it offered to do-it-yourselfers who want to save a ton of money on their water heating bills.

solar panelsThis no-frills guide takes you by the hand thoroughly explaining the types of DIY solar water heating systems available to the reader (e.g. active vs. passive) based on your individual needs. It even analyzes sub-categories of these systems to suit your geographical location such as installations in the tropics, freezing winter temperatures and even which type of system is best for the mineral content in your water. You will also learn about different heat exchangers, controllers, pumps, piping, valves and more.

Once you have decided the type of installation that best suits your needs, it’s time to start the building process. You will be taken through a variety of instructions for building your perfect water heater. Unlike some e-books that try to eat up space with large type, wide margins and photographs that do little to further your understanding of the subject at hand, Mr. Hayden spends nearly 100 pages delivering rich, yet easy-to-read, content with clearly marked diagrams of the systems he is describing.

Before delving into the process, however, you are given an extensive list of tools you will need for construction. Throughout the rest of the book, you are reminded about which systems are best for your location, where draining the system for freezing temperatures might be recommended, whether or not the particular system is recommended for connection to city water supplies and when you might need to contact a local plumber, engineer or permit office.

I am thoroughly impressed by Tom Hayden’s attention to detail and responsible approach to building a DIY solar water heating system. If this is a project you’ve been promising yourself to get to, now there’s no excuse.
